Thanks for trying, but I am afraid that that is not it. My left Alt is in shifted mode mapped to Meta_L, but when I try to invoke it (from LyX), by for example pressing Shift+Alt+X (to get into the minibuffer), nothing happens.... If you have more ideas, pls don't hesitate.

Hi Christina,

yup I had this problem too ... I think ... until I noticed I had two Alt
keys on the keyboard, one on the left and
one on the right. My Meta key was mapped to the Alt on the right, not on
the left! This caused me some
frustration until I worked it out (btw this is on W2k and W98 (laptop)
boxes).

I hope this is your problem too.
