Try using true type fonts in LyX GUI. These fonts are used ONLY in the GUI, not in the
document in itself! My LyX appears in french, but I guess it will be in Edit ->
Preferences -> Screen fonts and put something like

Roman: -monotype-times new roman
Sans empattement: -monotype-arial
Chasse fixe: -monotype-courier new

if times new roman, arial and courier ttf fonts are installed and available in your X
installation.

You are probably missing libforms-devel-1.0-release.i586.rpm for your compilation. The
-devel rpm holds the necessary headers files for compiling. I compile from rpm sources
libforms-1.0-release and lyx-1.2.2-1.src.rpm on a PIII-450 under Mandrake 9.0, it took
around 10 minutes for libforms and an hour for LyX (rpm --rebuild).
