why you don't just put "(" reference-box ")" (remove quote).
like in multiple citation, e.g.
(\citeauthor{bla85}, \citeyear{bla85}, \citeyear{bla85b}) or
(\citeauthor{bla85}, \citeyear{bla85}; \citeauthor{blab76, \citeyear{blab76})
I add brackets manually...
