This is difficult to say. LyX is shipped with most Linux distributions, and there your problems start - you can't count installations, let alone users. Quite a few people have some irrational fear to post to mailing lists (I have a notorious example sitting just round the corner...), so list traffic is no indication as well. That's probably the doom of LyX: Not even able to tell how many users there are and not a single copy sold so far. Tough times.
