(Just a prescript: I've actually searched the archives, in search of an
answer, to no avail. So I joined the list.)

{ Technical details: I'm using LyX 1.3.2 on OS X (10.2.6), with Qt
2.3.2. I don't know if it matters, because I don't have any
alternatives installed, but I'm using Apple's X server and window
manager. I built manually, rather than with Fink, so I could use the Qt
GUI. }

The problem I'm seeing is that no matter what options I run it with,
LyX will not pop up a spellcheck window. Now, some of the GUI elements
are horrifically slow in Qt, so I figured, the first time, well, maybe
if I just wait... But no. It simply never shows up. I've tried it with
both aspell and ispell. No luck.

When I first installed aspell, I forgot to install the English-language
dictionary, so I got an error message which indicates that it is
correctly trying to run the spellcheck command -- something like,
although I can't remember now, 'aspell: Cannot open directory
/sw/share/aspell/english'.

Can any of you all think of a rational explanation for why this would
happen, and is this a LyX problem, a Qt problem, or a combination of
one or the other or both with the fact that I'm using OS X?

Thanks, all, for any suggestions you can offer--
