I'm not sure this will be helpful to you, but I use LyX-1.3.2/Qt on
MacOS-10.2.6, have no problem with ispell, and none of the GUI
elements are "horrifically slow." You may want to check your ispell
installation, and make sure the LyX configuration could find it when
you built LyX.
