in old pentium computers using LTSP in my office.

I guess people is used to wait a little bit when the document is opening. 
So, maybe you could load the data displayed in document->layout dialog in 
that moment?

It's around a second and a half on this 800MHz celeron from a cold
start, which is too slow, but not unbearable. 1.4cvs should be a bit
faster.
