There are heaps and heaps of similar posts in the archives. Plus
fixes. Often described by me. Paul Rubin has also posted lots of
Win32-specific solutions. Go searching ;-)

That depends on the abilities (or lack thereof) of your dvi viewer. If
you can see your images in the .pdf file having used the conversion
route
lyx --(lyx export)-->
latex --(latex compiler)-->
dvi --(dvips)-->
ps --(ps2pdf)-->
pdf
(ie, *not* used pdflatex) then your dvi viewer is indeed rather
limited.
