Google "styles/algorithms.dvi" to find links to the manual for the 
algorithm and algorithmic environments.  (The docs might be installed 
on your system, for that matter -- look in the doc subtree of your 
texmf tree.)

Thx very much. I have found docs for that for latex.  The problem is how 
to use it in lyx. Just using the latex commands in lyx does not appear 
to work. 

I eventually found this email 
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg06820.html that 
talks about
article-algo.layout and algo.lyx.    Sadly I can find neither and I 
don't know how they relate to using AMS as provided in the lyx 1.3.4 
installation. 

I also found a link to 
http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/algorithm/algo-0.3.tar.gz in 
the mailing list archives but that does not work either.
