  I just answered my own question. For the archives, this is what I did:

  1) pdf2ps -- produces the .ps file.
  2) import into the GIMP as gray scale.
  3) crop to reduce a 1M+ file to 240k.
  4) save as .eps.
  5) put into a figure float and reduce width to 55% (just inside the text
area; probably could get away with 60% of full width).

  It looks great! And, it's legible, too.
