Following the suggestion in Herbert's Tips and Tricks page, I tried running 'pdfimage' on a one-page pdf which is a map (probably originally drawn in AutoCAD). I ended up with several hundred little files of the format '-xxx.pbm'. 'pdfimage' is probably extracting each layer as a separate file. Yuck!
What I would like -- if it can be done -- is to end up with a greyscale version of this location map that I can then bring into a figure float in my book. Since extracting "the" image didn't work, should I try pdf2ps, then ps2eps (after converting to greyscale with ImageMagick)? What's the most efficient approach that might result in a high-quality graphic? I'd prefer to not have to recreate the map locally. TIA, Rich -- Dr. Richard B.
