Weeeellll, how common pybliographer is doesn't really matter, now does
it? Either LyX can parse the file, or LyX can't. Implications of "LyX
is crap because..." won't help to improve the program. However,
volunteers are always welcome (and they do tend to make a
difference)...

In this particular instance, LyX has no problems at all. Try the
attached version of minimal.lyx which works for me:

$ diff -u minimal.lyx minimal2.lyx
--- minimal.lyx 2005-03-08 11:13:05.000000000 +0000
+++ minimal2.lyx        2005-03-08 11:17:06.845423576 +0000

+\begin_inset LatexCommand \BibTeX[plainnat]{papers2}

Why are you specifying the full path to plainnat? You should make the
location known to TeX by running 'texhash' from /usr/share/texmf to
update the 'ls-R' file that you'll find there. (Presupposes that
you're using the teTeX distribution.)

I'll post a screenshot of the citation dialog to your private email
(62kB).
