Yes I use afrikaans, english, german, dutch in the document. The dutch.ldf file look correct, so the problem is not there. If I try to edit it manually by removing the german in the \documentclass line as well as all the \selectlanguage{german} bits from the document I get more than 700 errors.

Uwe, when you say check for an actual version of my LateX distribition does that mean the SuSE may perhaps only have an old or incomplete version on their disk?
