I use CVS to track LyX files. It works fine. It does not use the LyX
version control features, I just use the ordinary cvs commands to
create, check out, and check in the changes. The best thing about this
approach is that the document CVS repository sits on a server, separate
from my computer, so if the PC falls in a lake, the repository is
sitting safe in the air-conditioned room.

As a sidenote: RCS has been (sort of) superseded by CVS a dozen years

Yes, but... can CVS or SVN be used with LyX. As far as I know there is
no way to specify the version control system LyX should use, and, as it
comes out-of-the-box, LyX calls rcs. In short, if you want to use CVS or
SVN you have to modify the code (If I am not wrong)
