I'm trying to compile and install LyX 1.3.6 from source on Mac OS 10.4.2, and I've found that the instructions for installation included with the package don't work. First of all, the instructions suggest using gcc 2.95.2 to compile both QT and LyX -- but this compiler is not included with Tiger's XTools. Can I
use gcc 3.3 or 4.0, or is 2.95 required?

At this point, nothing works ... but we're working on it. On 10.3, I had used gcc-2.95, since gcc-3.x failed to compile and it didn't seem worth the effort to figure out what was wrong. Now 10.4 (to which I just upgraded this week) breaks gcc-2.95, so we are trying to get gcc-3.3 to work. We're close but not there yet.

Second of all, the instructions seem to assume that we will download and install QT3, while Trolltech is now only offering stable versions of QT4. Will LyX
compile with QT4? There are developer, daily snapshot versions of QT3
available -- should I use one of these? I don't see anywhere to download
stable versions of QT3 on the trolltech website...

LyX isn't currently compatible with Qt4. You can find Qt/Mac-3.3.4 here: <ftp://ftp.rediris.es/mirror/Qt/qt/source/qt-mac- free-3.3.4.tar.gz>.

(By the way, LyX will compile with gcc-4, but Qt-3.3 won't -- at least not yet.)

Has anyone been able to build LyX in Tiger? Could someone give me a
step-by-step of how to do this (including where to get the necessary QT and
compiler archives, if necessary)?

In short, there are no step-by-step procedures at this point. Why not just use the precompiled LyX/Mac? -- You can get it here: <http:// wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Mac>.
