For the menu problems you have, what language are you using? (Do you
have anything set in ~/.MacOS/environment.plist?)
What happens if you simply trash the ~/Library/Application Support/
LyX-1.4 folder and then start LyX-1.4 (which will regenerate folders
there from scratch)?
