Dear Paul,
Does that mean that if I have the latest version of Lyx (1.4.3) for Windows
XP I do not have to worry about the \lyxformat command i.e. are later
versions backward compatible with earlier versions. Thanks in advance.

I think this just specifies what version of the LyX file format the
document uses.  The developers change the file format occasionally, and
this tells LyX whether it is opening a document written in an older
format (and possibly requiring some conversion) or newer format (and
possibly containing some indigestible elements).
