Dear Paul, Does that mean that if I have the latest version of Lyx (1.4.3) for Windows XP I do not have to worry about the \lyxformat command i.e. are later versions backward compatible with earlier versions. Thanks in advance. Mohan Chunkath

The developers change the file format occasionally, and this tells LyX whether it is opening a document written in an older format (and possibly requiring some conversion) or newer format (and possibly containing some indigestible elements). /Paul
