See the attached. You put the author's name in as a "short author name"
by positioning the cursor at the start of the author field and typing
'optional-insert' in the minibuffer (alt-x to open the minibuffer).
I have to say, though, that all this is much easier if you use one of
the supplied themes (or maybe modify one to your specific needs).
Several of the themes automatically fill in the short author name in the
footline, and some (e.g. Madrid) put the frame numbers in. When I use a
theme that doesn't do frame numbers, I create a "short title" by
executing optional-insert at the start of the title line, then put
\theframenumber in ERT in the short title. (I think there's an
analogous command, maybe \thetotalframenumber, to get the total number
of frames, but I won't swear to it.)
Thanks again, Paul. Perhaps, I am too choosy, but I do not like all
beamer themes that I know, the Madrid one included -- I find them too
sophisticated; I prefer a very simple, almost empty theme, like the
example that I sent.
