Sorry I was confusing. I should have been more explicit. I meant searching within the Mac finder for the file (which is also cmd-f). That was my first resort when I couldn't find an examples button in the Open File dialog.

I can't see a search field in the open dialog (with Mac OS). Is there something I have to type to bring it up?

Thanks very much for your help. I now have the example file to work through.

Thank you, Bennett. I don't think I would ever have found that without
directions. :)
I'm no great Mac expert, but if the folder you suggest is searched by the command-F, find file dialog, then I think it would be a great improvement on
the current situation.

I'm not sure what you mean here. <Cmd>f is for the search and replace dialog, which searches for text within the document.

If you use the File > Open dialog, you can type "examples" in the search field there and you should find the right directory in the list it provides. (Is that what you meant?)
