Thanks Alan for pointing me to this one!

SummatraPDF has one very nice feature that I haven't found in other PDF viewers so far and that makes it a particularly good choice for LyX/LaTeX:

If you select "Single Page" viewing mode the "PgUp/PgDown" keys go exactly one page back and forth - regardless of the currently visible part of the page. This is different from all other PDF viewers I have tried, which insist on displaying the non-visible part of the page first before switching to the top of nest page.

This means that it is now possible to zoom and scroll your PDF in a way that only the textarea is still visible, but not the margins, which tend to be quite huge with most LaTeX classes. Even though huge margins are good from the layout point of view, they are usually of little interest and just occupy screen space while writing and editing your work.
