I admit that I was not clear enough. What I mean is the following. Suppose that one has two footnotes with the same contents. Then, one would prefer using twice the same footnote mark (directing the reader to the same footnote text) instead of having two footnotes with exactly the same contents. This is particularly important when one is writing a paper with two authors with the same affiliation, and the affiliations being given in footnotes. Paul
