I still get the problem (Mac OS X) even when pasting from one table to
another table. I originally noticed the error when pasting *within the
same table* (to blank cells that already existed).
The upshot here is, something is different and wrong in 1.5x that
wasn't a problem in 1.4x. Formatting of tabular material was preserved
upon paste but now it is lost, and pasting multiple cells fails.
I'm not sure it's a problem with 1.5.x per se, since it works fine for
me on Win XP and apparently works on Debian Etch as well. I wonder if
this could be specific to OS X? It doesn't seem like the sort of
problem that would be specific to an OS, but who knows?
Can any other Mac user confirm the problem?

Yes, with 1.5.1 on OSX PPC 10.4:
- Make a 2x2 table.
- Insert apa (or whatever) in the upper row cells
- copying these and paste in the two lower cells. I get apa9apa (note
the 9!) in the cell where the cursor is positioned.
- If I copy to another table I get the same behaviour. Seems independent
of whether the table is in a float or not.
- I get the same behaviour with the 1.6-trunk (as of Aug 30, the Aug 31
build crashes when attempting to copy). Perhaps unrelated, in 1.6 the
text in the first table disappears when I move the cursor out of the
table and re-appears when I create the second table.
I performed your exact experiment in 1.5.1-1 on XP (again) and, once
again, got exactly what you would expect: 'apa' in all four cells in
the first case; second table a clone of the first in the second case.
So it appears that something is misbehaving in a manner specific to OS
X. Someone should enter this in bugzilla.
