Use "xpdf" instead of kpdf - xpdf will happily let you paste "äöüß"
into LyX. I just tested by exporting that text from LyX to pdf,
and reimport it.
What about opening the document in OpenOffice, exporting to LaTeX, and
then importing into LyX?
