Do you have web access to your mail account? If so, you might try posting to the list and then checking via the web (allowing time for the post to be processed). You should probably exit T-bird first, so that it's not checking mail in the background. This would let you narrow down whether the problem is on T-bird's side (post shows up in your mailbox but vanishes when T-bird collects it) or not.
Don't know if it's of any use to you, but I use T-bird to read/post, subscribing to the LyX news groups at Gmane. Works fine for the most part, no clutter in my in box, no adventures with spam filters. Replies to my posts also show up in my in box if the poster does a "reply all".
