OK, sorry about all these posts, but after rooting around I see that
Lyx is using tex4ht, so it seems what I need help with is how to add
the code into the lyx document so it adds the alt text when exporting
to html.

1. what program does lyx use for the HTML conversion (on the Mac),
I presume it tells me on the wiki somewhere but I can't find it.
2. I have tried several ways of using command 1 above to try and
add the alt text into the graphics latex options, but get compile
errors. the commands are obviously meant for tex4ht, but I thought
I would give it a try..
3. Assuming tex4ht isn't one of the two HTML export options in Lyx,
can I add it as an export option menu item.
