I used to cat the text in a file and to \input it in the LyX window.

In a more sophisticated way, I also used to build tables in latex code
in the external app where the calculations are made: if you find a typo in the
external code, you have just to run the external batch, run LyX
from the command line and you're done (you may have to review your
comments about the data however :-). That's a kind of offline mimic
of the inline data update offered by some text processing tools.

This makes a lot of auxiliary files: with the new embedded feature
developed by Bo Peng for 1.6, it won't be a problem any more.
