It turns out the root cause was the absense of this line in LaTeX produced by
1.5.3:
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
Once I added that line, everything worked perfectly. Yours worked well because
you're using 1.5.4, which automatically inserts that line in the created
LaTeX file.
