Incidentally, How does M-x work. Is "M" some special key that you hold
down. I have a macbook, so I have fn,ctrl, alt and cmd -is it one of them?

Thanks again for saving my day

Ah, sorry. M is the "Meta-Key", which is Alt here on my Linux PC. I think it's the Apple key on the Mac, but I'm not sure.

No, the "option" key. On my year-old keyboard, there is a small "alt" at the top of this key to help the confused.

Meta-Key is an Emacs expression isn't it? Or is it in more general use in Unix/Linux land?

Cordially,
