Dieter -- did you mean making the same mod to every section in the book, or on
a case by case basis?
In the former case you modify the Section environment. In the latter you'd
make different environments for the different Section appearances.
Modifying built in LaTeX environments can often be very tricky. There have
been times when I simply copied the code for the entire built in environment
into my layout file, made the necessary tweaks to the copy, and used
renewenvironment{}.
