I have a problem running the biblatex package on my Mac (not a problem with
the installation, the wiki howto is crystal clear and works); I can find no
way of using my .bib file when it is not stored in the texmf root folder.
Contrariwise to Windows+Miktex where you can easily access the files and
folders, on OS X, you have to log in as admin to add, edit, delete files the
root texmf folders (not to mention texhash, etc.). As a result, it is not
very convenient as such, when I make additions to my bib file, which is
frequent, since I am writing a long paper.

Did you insert the right path in Lyx, in the BibTex-references/database?

I also never had the problem to add files to texmf-folder, this could be
your preferences: you could change the status in the information-window
(cmd+i)
