I ran into the same problem. I just started using spellcheck.
There is a more direct solution. In Finder you can select
Go>Go To Folder (or shift-command-G). Then you can type
/usr/local/etc (or just /usr and then navigate from there). 
You can then change the
access privileges for aspell.conf. However,
in my case I also had to change the access
privileges for the etc folder. Once
you have done that you can edit the
aspell.conf file. Maybe this should be
added to the wiki?
