Following Richard's and Erez's suggestions I set out to chop both the lyx file
and the .bib file in smaller and smaller pieces to isolate the error.

Well, I solved the problem, but I am none the wiser. Here is what I did:

1. remove the batch of citations added to the bibtex file since the last
successful compilation. Try to recompile Lyx file. Result negative.

2. Put citations back in. Compilation still negative

3. Chop off the first half of the file. Try to compile. result positive!

so the problem must be in the second half.

4. Put first half of the file back in, chop off second half. Try to compile.
result positive !?

So where is the problem?

5. Put second half of the file back in. Now I have the whole file exactly as it
was before I started my bug-hunting expedition. Try to compile.
result: positive.

Now I have no problems left, except a firmly held belief that LaTex compilation
follows the rules of magic instead of the rules of logic.
Perhaps I'll buy myself a rabbit's foot to see if it is going to help next
time. Or I'll perform a little dance before hitting ctrl-T. Or whatever.

Cheers,

S.
