Paul,

  I don't have a 'Source' item on the View menu. However, loading lyx just
now to check your suggestion I see that the image has been found and
properly displays.

  Yesterday, before posting my message to the list, I shut down lyx and
restarted it without changing the result. Apparently it wanted me to log out
and log back in, or it just needed to think about the situation overnight.
Regardless, it seems to have fixed itself by benign neglect ... once again.
