You don't need this package, using this ore not is your choice. The Math manual, that you find in LyX's Help menu, tells you at the end of sec. 8.1 how units are typeset.

When you want to write 1 mm, you use: \unit[1]{mm}.
In Lyx, if I select that expression and press Ctrl+M to convert it to a
formula, I works perfectly. But if I start math mode first by pressing
Ctrl+M and type \unit[... it does not seem to work.
