I think, LYX must provide the mechanism to configure such things by user: - easy plug-in mechanism to add new classes & packages with updating menu/toolbars for new features. Now we need to edit specific files which unreal for beginners; - configurable convertion from LYX to TeX/LaTeX; - to add user-defined LaTeX commands and environments into menu/toolbars; - configurable preview for these user-defined things (may be, like a primitive graphical constructor); - ... It will be universal and flexible solution.
