I think "aligned" is AMS align. There's also AMS alignat and AMS flalign, among others. You might want to grab a copy of Herbert Voss's math mode document (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/math/voss/mathmode/) to see how various aligned environments differ. /Paul
