That's what I meant by funky code. The reason I asked is that I had a
suspicion. I also have my own redefinition of these commands in the
preamble and they break when used in section titles or figure captions.
I trained myself to accept changes in those cases before producing a
pdf, which is not ideal but is fine. Glad you solved your problem.
