Ahh, I misunderstood you.
The reason I asked is that I had a
suspicion. I also have my own redefinition of these commands in the
preamble and they break when used in section titles or figure
captions. I trained myself to accept changes in those cases before
producing a pdf, which is not ideal but is fine. Glad you solved your
problem.
Just for the sake of completeness, I am by no means a LaTeX or LyX
experts. I picked up the code above from this list yesterday. Jürgen
gave it a try and came up with the code solving my problem, Vincent
amended the situation in private communication this morning. Me too, I
can really live with accepting changes in the nasty cases as you
suggested.
