I should also mention that this behavior can't be overriden by adding Meta
shortcuts to my .bind file, so even the solution originally proposed (adding
each Meta- shortcut to the bind file) won't work.  That is, if I assign a
shortcut to "M-m" and then try to use Option-m from LyX, it still inserts a
\mu character, following the operating system's "special character"
behavior.
