The only workaround that I can think of is to insert a Microsoft Word object 
and 
make it take up the whole content area of the slide. Then you can put all the 
slide text and equation objects in there. It will be a struggle to make all the 
font sizes match the "real" powerpoint slides, though.

If you were lucky enough to be using PowerPoint 2010 you wouldn't have this 
problem; equations editing is now built in, so equations are just like text, 
instead of objects.
