I have converted some word files, and gave up on converting formatting.
I "copy" in libreoffice, and "paste/paste special" in LyX. This
preserves the text and the division of text into paragraphs.
All other formatting is lost, so I re-do that. (headings,
bulleted/numbered lists, emphasizing.) It is mostly scrolling through
the pasted document, using the paragraph type shortcuts (or combobox)
a lot.
figures: I save them from libreoffice, then insert them in LyX
tables: I recreate them.
I also recreate TOC, cross references and math.
I have the impression that there are various complicated conversions
that can preserve a little more, such as the headings and some
formatting. But if I have to go through the entire document anyway,
and fix conversion mistakes, then i might as well do the formatting
manually.
