IMO syntax errors in bst files are not harmless (per se). I would certainly
not use a broken bst file for a publication, and if a journal provides a
broken bst file, I would ask them to fix it.

This is not to say that skipping errors would not be a useful feature, but
this does not only apply to bibtex errors. However, if you skip such
errors, you should really know what you are doing, so I would not implement
such a feature in a very prominent place.
