Close, but not quite there. In Documents -> Settings -> Bibliography I select Natbib and Author-year. Save as document default. Then I insert the citation I want at the appropriate location. When I save the document and look at the preview, instead of seeing 'Cuffney et al. 2007' I see (author?) in bold face followed by [1]. There's a step I missed that I do not see.
