Mark,
Bluetooth does work, but it has some different behaviors from a cable
obviously.  It gets marketed as "cable replacement" but really, it can't
emulate a cable.  It is a radio.  It buffers, it has a retransmission
protocol etc.
I think it is reasonable to get a commercial Rs-232 to bluetooth module.  I
would recommend that you get one that supports both XON  XOFF and hardware
flow control, to cover all situations.
