I definitely was able to save and load with audacity. Also I was able to
make recordings with audacity and play them back via iOS. I don't think I
ever managed to record and play back with iOS.

A dedicated app would probably be best for android and iOS. Something that
can do the a2d conversion and decode the file format.

I have information on the cassette file formats if anyone is interested.
