AFAIR, (but It's 30 years ago!) that's what he used, sorting in RAM (actually, on RAMdisk) a almost-sorted list.
Consider that this was done (probably before the Model T) in the early-80s, on a boosted (3,5 Mhz) TRS-80. ANYTHING that was faster was amazing on that machine.
