Unlike a larger computer that plugs in to the wall, you're not at very much risk of hurting anything by merely turning it on, even if things are bad inside. It might or might not need some work, but you won't make it worse by turning it on. There is no AC power supply to explode it's caps, or feed over-voltage to parts because a cap or a regulator is out of spec etc.
It's not a bad idea to have a look inside to check for obvious corrosion, and replace the original nicad battery before it leaks (or clean up and address whatever needs adressing if it already did leak).
