Like most NiCad charging circuit of the day this one is really crude. Just a current limiting resistor, R165. It looks like R165 is 27ohms. This is a 'time based' charging scheme, i.e. if you leave the AC adapter plugged in too long you cook the NiCads. This circuit will cook NiMh batteries just as readily if the adapter is left plugged in too long so there is no greater danger to using NIMh compared to NiCads.
