The software prefetch policy controls the handling standard Alpha software prefetch instructions. I'd suggest looking at the Alpha reference manual if you're not familiar with these. These instructions are typically inserted by the compiler.

Alpha defines prefetch instructions only for the data cache. There was a former student here at Michigan (Dave Greene) who did some work on software prefetch instructions for the instruction cache, for which he added some support for that to m5, but that's not standard Alpha and we don't support it any more.

Hi all,
I have a doubt on SoftwarePrefetchPolicy.
For the Full CPU, there is parameter of sw_prefetch_policy.
It looks like issue the prefetch by CPU itself, not the prefetch mechanism of cache. My questions here are: (1) This SoftwarePre fetch by CPU only prefetch data cache when miss, or do it on instruction cache too? (Right now I can only find the relative data prefetch code. My understanding is wrong?) (2) Could you recommend the reference paper for this SoftwarePrefetch? I hope I can clarify the intention of this technique and my doubt by the recommended reference paper. Thanks a lot! Magic
