Never mind. I upgraded scons to 0.96.92 and Python to 2.4.3 and rebuilt.
(I had been running with scons 0.96.1 and Python 2.3.something). The
boot process is much faster now (a matter of seconds to a minute or so)

Chris,

In the future please go ahead and post questions to the mailing list so
the answers will exist in the archive for others users.
To answer your questions linux-boot should take a minute or two to run
to completion and linux-boot-detailed will take about an hour depending
on your hardware. What is the console output that is shown?
